Updates to Facilities
Over our Christmas Break our high school saw the library receive new furniture and workspaces after over 30 years of use, a new rooftop HVAC unit in the "C Wing," and fresh paint in one of the hallway spaces.
This winter two of our educators have been recognized as outstanding educators. Kristi Fisher, who serves as a guidance counselor at the Middle School, was voted educator of the year by the Chamber or Commerce, while Diane Sammons, a second grade teacher, was named teacher of the year by the VFW. Congratulations to those two staff members. We are privileged to have a great team at Wapakoneta City Schools.

ACT: On March 11 we will be giving all juniors a free ACT exam. This will require all staff members to facilitate the exam. Therefore, the high school will not have classes on March 11. Only juniors will come to school that day to take the ACT exam.
The majority of local scholarships will become available to this year's senior class around the beginning of February. The Guidance Office will have a set of senior announcements ready with this information at the end of January. Announcements will be given to students in English classes. They may view them on the Guidance Office web page, or they may stop in the Guidance Office and get a copy as well.
Makerspace
Makerspace is a collaborative and creative workspace that will provide our students with access to various tools, materials, and technology for hands-on projects.
Our Makerspace has 3D printers, a laser cutter, woodworking tools, metal working tools, a plotter, computers with design software, and more. The goal of our Makerspace is to expose students to multiple pieces of equipment and to allow them to design products in-house for fundraisers, classes, community members, and businesses.
Students can take a Makerspace 1 course where they begin learning the basics of the pieces of equipment. We are looking at adding a Makerspace 2 course where students will expand their skills with the equipment.
Students at the high school have the opportunity to learn in many different ways. From college credit courses, Makerspace, working with computers, art courses, and what you would think of as traditional classrooms. Our students have so many opportunities at their fingertips. In the picture below, our students in the FFA learn from Mr. Brown how to handle piglets in the school barn.
The Wapakoneta Internship Networking (WIN) program is in its 5th year at Wapakoneta High School. This program allows senior students to internship with local businesses so they can discover what they want to pursue in their future careers.
During the first semester of school, we had 48 senior students complete internships. We would like to thank all the local businesses that open their doors to allow our seniors to complete meaningful internships.
Please continue to check out our W.I.N. Student Spotlights on Wapakoneta City Schools' social media page.
This year our students will be performing the school play “Love, Liz” on March 14 & 15. Tickets will be sold online.
We want to congratulate our choir students for their outstanding performances during the Christmas season!
Because our students will not have class on March 11, we will have freshman, sophomores, and juniors come to school that day to schedule their classes for next year. 8th grade students will schedule during their English class. If, for some reason, a student cannot make it in to schedule on March 11, our guidance counselors will schedule classes with those students at a different time.
Robotics
The 2024-2025 robotics season has kicked off and students are currently designing and building a robot to solve a problem that was released in early January. The team is taking part in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and will compete in Cincinnati March 26 – 29.
This is their third year competing in FRC, where they build much larger and more robust robots than the previous, smaller robots they used to compete with. This program gives them exposure to industry-based concepts such as the use of pneumatics, coding, electronics, and custom fabrication of parts utilizing tools in our Makerspace.
The team is comprised of 9th through 12th grade students and is coached by Nate Ambos and Devin McBride, both graduates of Wapakoneta High School. The team is made possible through the support of Wapakoneta City Schools and the generous contributions of our sponsors. Currently, our 2024-25 primary sponsor is VFW Post 8445 in Wapakoneta, and our Gold Sponsors are the Wapakoneta Masonic Lodge, Wapakoneta Breakfast Optimist Club and American Legion Post 330.
On December 9, 2024, and December 16, 2024, our choirs and bands, respectively, performed their Christmas concerts. The choirs consisted of 6th and 7th grade performances, as well as our new 5th grade after-school choir. This is our second year for the 5th grade after-school choir. These students meet once a week after school for music education, singing, and performing. Our bands include 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students. Our choirs performed a variety of numbers ranging from Christmas songs, winter songs, and songs honoring veterans, while the bands performed many Christmas numbers.

On Monday, November 11, 2024, Wapakoneta Middle School hosted its annual Veterans Day program. This year marks the 19th consecutive year of hosting the event. Our students and their invited veterans gathered in the cafeteria for coffee and donuts, followed by a moving assembly that pays tribute to all who have served. This year’s keynote speaker was Shelby Jordan, Army veteran and currently working in the medical field. A huge thank you to the WMS Student Council, led by Co-Presidents Elijah Essex and Kennedy Martin, supervisors Joni Wade and Abby Conkle, as well as the WMS Choir and an ensemble of high school students, led by Mary Dildine and Marissa Lewis. We would also like to thank Dan Wilson for filming the event and posting it to his YouTube channel, as well as getting it out to the public through TSC!
School Safety
This year the middle school staff has been spending a great deal of time focusing on the safety of our students and the staff. In fact, on our two hour professional development day they worked with our administration and school resource officer to be better prepared for emergencies.
PBIS Quarterly Raffles
The WMS PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Committee consists of members who have many different roles throughout the building and is led by Mrs. Schneider, our assistant principal. Over the course of a few years, this group has worked to build our PBIS program into what it is now. Some new adjustments to the program have been the addition of quarterly raffles and more access to the PBIS Store through scheduling changes and utilization of the store during lunch. Thank you to the WMS PTO, Wapakoneta Arby’s, Wapakoneta McDonald’s, VFW Post 8445, Midwest Electric, Inc., and the Breakfast Optimist Club for their sponsorships this school year!
Sixth grade students attended a performance by the Lima Symphony Orchestra at the Veterans Memorial Civic Center in Lima.

Redskin Ready to be better today!
We are continuing our service learning project with the Ronald McDonald house this year. We want to thank our families who have already contributed to this fundraiser by collecting can tabs and joining us at our first McTeacher Night of the year. We look forward to seeing if we can surpass last year’s grand total of $19,740.30!
Kindness Council
The Kindness Council is a group of 4th graders dedicated to spreading kindness throughout our school and community. They promote leadership, compassion, empathy, and generosity among students. Members of this council are responsible for delivering morning announcements on Tuesdays, distributing Golden Tickets to recognize students who exemplify the Redskin Way, and serving as buddies to other students across the building. This new committee was initiated by Mrs. Bowman.
Below, students in Kindness Council paint rocks, known as "Kindness Rocks" to be placed around the entrances and exits.
Twice a year the Noon Optimists recognize students from all the buildings who are nominated by our staff. These young people demonstrate what it is like to Redskin Ready and are great examples of what type of behavior and character is expected in our school building.
At Wapakoneta Elementary, we are committed to our school’s slogan: Be Respectful, Responsible, and Kind. Throughout the school year, students are recognized and rewarded for demonstrating these important character traits. They have the opportunity to earn Redskin Ready Tickets, Golden Tickets, and even be nominated for the Student of the Month award. We are incredibly proud of our amazing students and will continue to strive to #BeBetter!

Benchmark Testing
CES students recently finished their second round of benchmark testing in MAP and DIBELS. These assessments are used to see the students’ growth and progress throughout the school year. The data is also used for student grouping in the classrooms, as well as for intervention groups.
Our instructional staff dives deep into these assessments to look for specific areas of need, and provides ways to help students grow. Students will do one more round of benchmark testing in the spring, as well as third and fourth grade state testing. We are excited about the growth we’re seeing in our students!
In December, Opportunity School students had the pleasure of visiting MVP Farms in Celina to witness first hand what it looks like to go from farm to table. The individuals at this facility were so educated and explained in detail everything they needed to learn. A tour was taken by all students and then they were able to get an up close and personal view of the milking process. Following the facility tour, students enjoyed the simulators and a fresh yogurt from the refrigerator.
Thanksgiving Meal
The Opportunity School held its first Thanksgiving luncheon giveaway. Just under 200 meals were prepped, packaged and served on Friday, January 22.
This project instilled caring, giving, empathy, and hard work for the students. What an incredible day, with a great turnout.
At the end of the day, we also served the Wapakoneta Police Department and Wapakoneta Fire Department 18 meals each.
Projects They Have Worked On
The students at Opportunity School have encountered many projects throughout the school year. During construction lessons, students built two shop tables to use while in class. These shop tables have served as future learning spaces and a place for students to continue learning hands-on lessons. The students completed wall framing, electrical wiring, and drywall finishing before the conclusion of the semester. Additionally, students have completed the overhaul of several small engines, including lawn mowers and lawn vacuums. In the culinary department, students have mastered the art of cooking on a budget and have learned many ways to make food items rather than buy them. If you have any equipment to donate to the students of Opportunity School, please contact Mr. Wolke at 419-739-5197.
**If you have any opportunities for community service, they would like to help with those projects as well!
